âYou want me to do what? Are you out of your rabid assed mind?â
I am addressing my district supervisor for a nationally known archery company in whose employ I happen to be at the time. Now I'm fully aware this is not the manner in which one addresses his superior, but this is a little different. He has just informed me, he wants me to climb a mountain in Tennessee, and shoot a wild European Boar with a bow and arrow, so now you see why I'm a little disturbed.
It's early May of 1987, I've been in the employ of this well known archery company since 1974. It's my job during the hunting season, primarily deer season, to travel around the country, to pre-arranged sporting shops and give demonstrations on how easy it is for you to learn how to shoot a bow and arrow. Now I've won my share of awards around the country with the bow. I've taken my share of big and small game with the traditional stick and string. However, this last request seems a little out of my league.
âJust hold on before you get too damned upset, and let me explain,â Dwayne, my supervisor, screams. He is also a friend of mine, so maybe that will help explain our strange relationship, at least to some degree. Dwayne continues with his explanation of this insane idea.
âWe have developed a new bow and we want you to give it a field trial. The hunt will be filmed and will promote the bow in Big Sky Magazine. You will have a full weeks vacation in the beautiful Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee. All expenses paid, plus your regular salary of $100.00 per day. In addition, you will pick one of your hunting buddies to accompany you on this trip. His expenses will also be paid. Now, you need to be careful who you select to take this venture with you, because some of these guys you hunt with are completely unacceptable.â
I tried to absorb all this information in my clouded brain. A hundred bucks a day, plus expenses, is a wad of money in 1987. I'm forty-eight years old and in reasonably good condition. I stand to make about seven-hundred bucks, get a great vacation and some national exposure.
The question seems to be, am I mentally strong enough to take on such a venture?
Hell, yes, I am! I'm damn near bullet proof! I know just the guy to take along on this insane trip, Don Petersen. He's young, 22-years old, strong, and is an excellent shot. He'll do exactly what I tell him.
Dwayne calls Caryonah Hunting Lodge in Crossville, Tennessee, makes all the arrangements for our lodging and guide, sets the date and seals the deal.
I call Don, explain all the details to him. He's so excited he may come over and camp on my doorstep, til we are ready to go.
A week later, UPS delivers the new bow to me, along with all the accessories I had requested. I've got two weeks to practice with this new outfit and then it's off to Tennessee.
